Janelle Monáe has been on the B-Sides radar for quite some time, and with good reason. Signed to P-Diddy’s label, Bad Boy, Monáe is an all-around performer whose shows are as entertaining as her voice is impressive. The Midwest native initially pursued a career on Broadway, but her passions for music were overwhelming and lead to a label partnership with Big Boi of Outkast. As a prolific writer, Monáe originally conceived the ‘Metropolis’ concept to be released in four parts, or “suites”, however was modified after signing with Bad Boy. Her current release, The ArchAndroid comprises the second and third suites of the concept and has garnered critical praise for the young artist. Monáe plans to create both a movie and graphic novel based on the album in the near future. Check out the interview with B-Sides host, Pete Mar, as Janelle Monáe discusses the concept of the protagonist of Metropolis, Cindi Mayweather, who is also her alter ego, and more!
