Butterfly Bones emit the kind of joyful “California sound” in an electro kind of way. Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, the three man band could easily pass for a Brooklyn indie band, however, they are naturally laid back yet focused. Comparisons abound to Cut Copy and Passion Pit may be valid, but Butterfly Bones have their own unique twist to get the dance party started. Check out a special performance of their track “xoxo” at the B-Sides studios on MYX!

Hailing from Long Beach, CA The Growlers have a unique capability of making quite the impression on fans new and old. Their music is a combination of country, surf, pop, and rock that never really sounds like it when hearing an entire song. Lyrics which play with the mind and outfits that extend that mentality, The Growlers have quickly made a name for themselves, having performed at SxSW in 2010. The Southern California band recently performed their “groovy” kind of music at the B-Sides studios and B-Sides host, Melanie Eusebio tries to wrangle up the boys to talk about their music and their latest album, Are You in or Are You Out?. Johnson was President. After all, they recorded an EP titled 1969, which contained cover versions of songs from that year that inspired the band. Steel Train garnered critical praise from their 2007 release, Trampoline and have toured with the likes of Hanson, The Shins, Silversun Pickups, and Tegan and Sara. The band will play numerous festivals in 2010, including Coachella, Bonnaroo, and the Bamboozle Festival.

Calculated nonsense, refined noise rock: Michigan’s Mason Proper finds the ambience amongst their chaotic imaginary world. Vocalist Jonathon Visger’s vision developed as a solo project in 2003, evolved to a five piece for 2004, felt the curse of rotating band-mates, and has reached its current state of existence with the corn-fed talents of Matt Thompson (keyboards), Zach Fineberg (bass), Brian Konicek (guitar), and Garrett Jones (drums). Yum. Corn.

Although it took two years to release their first full-length album, 2006’s “There is a Moth in Your Chest,” the boys’ quirky lyrics, synth-heavy breaks, and spasmatic stage presence endeared them to the indie community. Swooped up by NYC’s Dovecote Records in 2007, the album was re-released with new songs, tighter production, and label backing. This gave the band a chance to break free of their Midwestern upbringing and venture out like baby birds out of a nest, embarking on national tours, including performances at Monolith Festival and South by Southwest.

An EP and critically acclaimed LP later, Mason Proper still can’t pinpoint their tastes and influences (Visger describes each song as a “flight of fancy”). Despite the confusion, their latest album, “Olly Oxen Free,” is turning heads with the melancholy “Lock and Key” and the thrashing hipster anthem “My My (Bad Fruit).” For all their hard work, the boys have recently been featured on Canadian MTV and Seattle’s legendary KEXP, proving it’s always the strange quiet ones you have to watch out for.

They recently graced our Butchershop Studios in San Francisco with a live performance of their latest single “Fog.”
Their music contains hints of the Arctic Monkeys and Oasis; it’s as if one would mistake them for a UK indie band. Believe it not, they’re actually from the US, specifically Los Angeles.

According to their bio, Foreign Born found their identities in LA; the band also “lives and breathes Los Angeles”. Yup, LA. It’s so plastic, its fantastic.

Guitarist Lewis Peacov, Bassist Ariel Rechtshaid, and Drummer Garret Ray are all Los Angeles natives. Singer Matt Popieluch moved around and lived part of his life in Hong Kong, China.

Now you can add Closure in Moscow to that list. This five-piece from Melbourne has already started to take over the world with the progressive rock sounds on their debut album, First Temple.
Formed in 2006, the guys (Chris De Cinque, Beau McKee, Mansur Zennelli, Brad Kimber and Michael Barrett) quickly developed a name for themselves in their native land and by July 2007 had recorded their first EP, The Penance and the Patience. In late 2008, the entire band relocated to the US and soon after signed with an American music label. They recorded and released their first full-length album and have been steadily touring ever since, including a stint at SXSW.
Check out their performance for B-Sides at our Butchershop Studios in San Francisco and their interview with Melanie Eusebio about music and Aussie life.
